At Laura Karoline Photography, I have been photographing newborns since 2012. I added lifestyle / in-home newborn photography to my repertoire around 2018, and I have absolutely fallen in love with this genre of photography since then! There is something so special about photographing a new baby and their family in their most comfortable place- home! During a Raleigh Lifestyle Newborn Session, the majority of the photos are family and parent images, with just a few of baby alone. When there are siblings involved, I do include the sibling(s) in a high percentage of the pictures. However, when it is a first baby, the majority of the photos are parent photos. Over time, I have developed a list of certain parent pictures that I try to get during every session when the baby is a first-born. In this post, I would love to share with you some of my go-to parent poses that have become client favorites. As a Raleigh lifestyle newborn photographer, I specializes in capturing the natural beauty and joy of parenthood, and have had the privilege of witnessing the incredible bond between parents and their newborns. During lifestyle newborn sessions, I aim to create genuine and heartfelt images that reflect the unique connection and love within a family!
Parents on bed- far away
I often start a lifestyle newborn session on the bed. This is a cozy spot where mom and dad spend a lot of time with baby in those first few months, so it is a special location to capture! I like to include a pull-back shot of mom and dad to tell a story and set the stage.
Smiling photo on the bed
Most photos during a lifestyle newborn session are of parents looking at baby, but I also love to capture a smiling photo on the bed. This is a great place to include a dog, if you have one!
Closeup of parents with baby on bed
My clients love close-up shots, so this is always a fan favorite! I come in closer to get a snapshot of mom and dad looking down at baby while they are all cuddling on the bed together.
Baby in between mom and dad
This photo gets chosen 99% of the time. Parents hold baby in between and I take the photo over their shoulder. Sometimes I’m able to frame it so that baby is in between mom and dad kissing, which is a favorite also!
Nursery
I know that many parents put a lot of time and energy into designing baby’s nursery. It is a reflection of the parent’s style, plus it’s a lot of fun! I always try to capture some of the nursery in photos, as a sweet memory.
Mom in Rocker
There is often a rocking chair or glider in the baby’s nursery. Parents spend a lot of time in the rocker with baby, so it’s a sweet and comfortable place to capture a photo of a newborn with their mommy! I am sometimes able to bring the partner into this photo as well, sitting on the arm or kneeling next to the rocker.
Looking Down at the Crib
What new parent doesn’t spend ages just staring at and adoring their baby? I always love to capture parents next to the nursery, just admiring their sweet new little one and/or holding their hand.
In front of window
This is probably my number one requested photo! I always take a small series of photos in front of a window in the client’s home. I usually start with just mom, then I bring the other parent in for a few pictures with everyone together.
Laying behind baby
This pose is always a hit, but I always check with mom first to make sure she is comfortable laying in this position having recently given birth. When it works out, it makes for a cute photo of mom and dad looking down adoringly at their newborn baby.
Playing with baby on bed
I do variations of this photo with both mom and dad! I have them look down at baby, hold their hand, give kisses, etc.
Laying next to baby on bed
This is usually a very flattering pose of baby with mom! I typically start with mom laying next to baby, and then bring dad in behind.
Baby on dad’s shoulder
This is probably one of my favorite poses! Baby lays high up on dad’s shoulder. If baby is awake, sometimes they can lift their wobbly little head up, which makes for a very sweet picture!
Mom snuggling with baby
There are so many ways to snuggle with a newborn! I usually capture quite a few pictures of each parent snuggling with their new little one, but here are just a few examples of moms snuggling with their babies.
Standing beside window
I usually capture a few photos of parents holding baby next to a window during the session, just looking down and admiring their newborn and cuddling together.
