You might want to capture those first moments after birth in the hospital, or you may want to wait until your little one is older before having a portrait session. Either way, one thing’s certain: there are many different types of newborn sessions available today. We’ll take a look at the most common types of Newborn Sessions so that you know why each type makes sense for different families.

There are many types of newborn photography sessions, but in my experience, the most common two are:
- Studio newborn sessions: These usually occur in the studio and typically last at least an hour. They’re great if you want something more formal and timeless. At Laura Karoline Photography, this is the most popular option.
- Lifestyle newborn sessions: These usually take place at your home or in another familiar setting (like your backyard). They feel more relaxed because you don’t have to travel far. Many people choose lifestyle over studio for this reason.
In-home Lifestyle
For those looking to capture their family in their own environment, we offer in-home lifestyle sessions. These sessions are great for families with pets, as they can be done anywhere in the home. An in-home lifestyle session could be done in the family room, nursery or even outdoors!
Lifestyle sessions are wonderful for parents who want to capture photos of baby in their nursery. A lot of parents spend a great deal of time and effort in decorating baby’s nursery, and it is truly a special place. You can feel the love in baby’s nursery! When I do Raleigh in-home lifestyle sessions, I always try to capture some of the nursery.
If your newborn is between 1-2 months of age this may be a good option for you! During this session expect to get some photos of baby in your arms and on their own as well as with siblings (if applicable). You will also have time for mom & dad portraits too!
Studio Newborn
A studio newborn session is best for families who want a more posed session. The photos will have a timeless look, so if you want them to be on your wall forever, this is the way to go! This type of session can include family photos and photos of baby alone. We recommend booking a studio newborn session if you don’t want to worry about cleaning your home before a session (or just don’t have time).
In a studio session, we have the advantage of using our professional equipment and backdrops. We also have more control over the lighting and can make sure that it’s exactly what we want for your photos. If you’re looking for a more traditional look, this is definitely the way to go!
For our newborn sessions, we provide all props and swaddles for baby. All you have to bring are the essentials like milk/formula, pacifier, and diapers. This is another advantage of studio newborn sessions- there is often more variety available for baby’s setups.
Studio newborn sessions can range anywhere from one hour to several. Laura Karoline Photography currently offers two different types of studio sessions. The first is a mini swaddled session, which includes only the pictures of baby, and baby is swaddled the whole time. The other session is a longer option, which includes some newborn poses as well as family images.
When you’re considering your newborn session, think about what kind of photos you want first. Do you want more posed shots? Is it going be more candid? Or maybe you want something a little bit different like a minimalist or more candid studio shoot? Either way, each type of shoot has its own benefits.
But remember, at the end of the day- your baby will look adorable no matter what type of newborn session you choose, and these images will be treasured for a lifetime!
