What to Wear to Your Session

Photography is an investment, and of course everyone wants to look their best in their photos! Many people don’t realize the impact that clothing has on an overall aesthetic of a photograph. As your photographer, I feel that part of my job is to guide you in the right direction so that you choose appropriate clothing that photographs well and adds to the overall photo in a pleasing way. Here are a few rules to follow when choosing your family’s clothing for your session:

Board #1 has great examples of gorgeous light, neutral clothing combinations. There are a lot of maternity clothes on this board, but it gives you a great overall idea of what can look nice. Board #2 has a few more colorful options to help you coordinate.

  • Stick with solids and subtle prints (like light stripes or a light plaid). Avoid large logos and bold patterns.
  • Don’t forget about your shoes, they might be in the photos! Avoid tennis shoes/sneakers. Flats, boots, sandals, and loafers look nice. You may be asked to stand on slightly uneven ground and/or hold your little one, so you may also want to avoid high heels.
  • Color matters! Personally, I prefer light neutrals (white, cream, light grey, brown, etc). I think that they add a lightness to the photos. However, whatever colors you choose, make sure that they coordinate throughout each family member. You don’t want to look matchy-matchy (for example, all in white), but you don’t want to all be wearing random colors, either. Take time to choose colors that coordinate well. (EXAMPLES OF COLORS THAT LOOK NICE TOGETHER: cream+brown, grey+cream, blue+grey, green+brown, pink+navy, cream+navy)
  • Ladies- watch out for shirts that are low cut and/or show your bra strap. You don’t want to have to constantly be pulling your shirt up or adjusting your bra 😉
  • Remember that a scarf, earrings, a necklace, or a bracelet can really add a touch of class to your photo. A scarf can also add a pop of color.
  • Keep it simple! For guys, a polo, button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled up, or a sweater can look very nice.
  • Keep it comfy! Unless you are looking for very formal photos, jeans, khakis, or leggings are great.
